My New and Improved Studio

11 Jul

My studio is typically referred to as “the work room” or “the storage room.” It needs a lot of work and is only used for storage.  Until now.

I had a pretty lucky past few weeks in the free/really inexpensive furniture and home decor department.  After leaving the Durham Art Guild about two weeks ago, where I am a member and volunteer, I found a bright red bookcase by the dumpster.  It was dirty and a bit wobbly, but I knew a few nails, a good cleaning, and a fresh coat of paint was all it needed to make in shine again.  From there, I went to The Scrap Exchange where I bought a large, burlap coffee bag.  When I got home, I gave the bookcase the makeover it deserved, made a place for it in “the work room,” and then placed it in its new home.  I hung the burlap sack on the wall and an antique Mason jar pendant lamp from the ceiling over the bookcase.  The coffee bag and light were nice additions to the space and the bookcase provided additional storage which was long overdue.

Ink, wash, repeat.

My exploration into different media has lead me to ink and watercolor on paper. My first ink bottle is now empty – much of which was lost during a fatal spill on my carpet and bedspread. Luckily, I use Liquitex Acrylic Ink, which, unlike india ink, I was able to clean immediately leaving both surfaces clear of ink stains.

Below are some ink/wash paintings I’ve completed so far. A few of these are for sale on my Etsy store. Comment, so I know what you like!  Thanks!

This year’s Annual Members’ Show 09-10 at the Durham Art Guild runs from July 7-August 4, 2009.  There will be over 130 pieces of art for sale ranging in media from photography to oil paintings and prices from $30 to $6000.  Thirty-percent of each piece sold goes towards the Durham Art Guild, “a non-profit, member-driven organization with the primary goal of operating a visual arts gallery that features the work regional artists.”

I am lucky to be one of the artists whose work is exhibited.  The piece in my previous post titled “Fuzzy Reflections”; will be for sale for $150.

The opening reception is Friday, July 17.  It is free and open to the public.  Wine and snacks will be served.  This is a great time to see the work and a perfect opportunity to meet the artists!  You don’t want to miss it.

Postcards Giveaway Winners!

20 Jun

Thanks to everyone who entered the Postcards Giveaway!

I used RANDOM.ORG to generate two numbers between one and seven, which was the number of participants.  Results: two and five.  The winners are Ashlee Kinser and Aik!  They each won four postcards with my paintings printed on them.  Here’s what they had to say about writing letters:

Ashlee asked her students to name various ways on communication.  They could only name cell phones for calling and texting!  Another student was working on improving his handwriting skills for his job and questioned when this would even be useful.  “Writing thank you notes!” she said.  Ashlee, thank you for reminding and encouraging your students to write.  Enjoy the postcards!

Ashlee is also a photographer based in Pensacola, FL.  Check out her site here.

Aik said, “I love receiving letters, it’s a sign of sincerity.  However, I feel lazy to send my replies. The post office is sssooo far away…”  Aik lives in Malaysia!  Thanks for entering Aik, and congrats!  Writing is a sincere act.  It takes a lot more time and effort to send something through the mail than over the internet.  Keep writing, Aik!

Aik is a blogger of arts, literature, music, and more. Check our her blog here.

Congratulations, Ashlee and Aik!

Ink Drawings

I discovered my new favorite medium: ink!  I have been drawing with ink, and then painting with watercolors over the sketches.  Fun stuff.  You can find several of these for sale on my Etsy store.

Here is a peak at one of them in progress…
